I had previously bought several self-cleaning brushes that I rated 5 stars, but when I looked for more on Amazon to share with my friends who have cats and dogs, I found these available for around $8. I decided to give them a shot.
WOW. I canāt find the right word to describe how these brushes surpass the already excellent ones I had. Both of my cats were fine with being brushed with the old brushes as long as I followed the direction of their fur. The little one even tolerated backbrushing, but the larger one would run away. With these new brushes, however, both cats allow me to backbrush them, and the big guy even jumps onto my desk several times a day to ask for a brushingāyes, including backbrushing!
What sets these brushes apart from the perfectly good ones I used before? The bristles have a coated tip thatās clearly gentler on their skin. Plus, despite brushes usually causing static that makes cat hair cling to them when the bristles retract, these brushes reduce that static charge significantly, so the hair sticks much less.
Hereās a tip: instead of retracting the bristles and then cleaning the brush, let it sit with the bristles facing down for a bit. The static charge will dissipate, allowing you to hold the brush over a trash can and retract the bristles. The hair will fall off cleanly without needing to use a tissue or paper towel.
Another piece of advice is to start with slow, gentle strokes when using these brushes. I gave one of my old brushes to my brother, and he recorded himself using it on one of his catsāit was a disaster. He had to restrain a growling cat, and I tried to explain that starting out aggressively would ruin any chance of brushing that cat again. I sent him one of these new brushes (I think), but knowing him, he probably hasnāt even tried it yet. Iāll share this review with him and see what he thinks.

While you should still apply light pressure for safety, it effectively removes a lot of hair.
