This dematting tool is effective for the smaller mats on our long-haired black cat, but he was not fond of having his fur tugged to remove the larger mats. I canât blame him for getting grumpy when I tried to tackle those bigger knots. If I had a huge tangle in my hair, I would be in pain too if the only solution was to yank it out!
For the larger mats, I ended up using a human beard trimmer with the guard attached to shave them off. Although he was a bit nervous about the noise from the trimmer, he didnât scratch or try to bite me. If he ever develops larger mats again, Iâll opt for the trimmer to avoid causing him any discomfort.
As first-time owners of a long-haired cat, weâre still learning how to manage his grooming needs. I also plan to schedule a professional grooming session in the spring before the hot weather arrives, so he has less trouble with mats.

The product is sturdy, ergonomic, and fairly intuitive to use, but it requires some caution. Itâs a brush with blades that allow hair to pass through the combâs teeth when itâs smooth, but when it encounters a knot, the hair puts pressure on the blades and gets cut. At least thatâs how itâs supposed to work. I have an elderly cat who has stopped grooming herself, so I needed something more effective than just scissors for tackling the knots. Itâs useful, but not a guaranteed solution. Its effectiveness really depends on how tangled the fur is. DO NOT USE FORCE. If you care for your pet, avoid yanking violently in hopes of removing the toughest knots (and trust me, my cat has some!). Patience is key; you may need to go over the area several times. Additionally, hold the fur at the base to minimize discomfort for your pet while using the brush. If itâs still not working, it may be that the fur is so knotted that a trim of the problematic area is the best option. I think using it regularly can help, especially in combination with a fine-toothed brush to tackle the undercoat that tends to tangle. Since Iâve only had it for a short time, I canât yet evaluate the durability of the blades or the brush itself. They seem solid and well-made, but Iâm uncertain how long they will last or how well the blades will maintain their sharpness. Iâll update the review if necessary.

This product is far from effectiveâhonestly, a regular comb would do a better job for a cat. The comb portion of this furminator is a laughably small 1.25 inches wide, making it absurdly inadequate for cat grooming. Although it claims to be adjustable, the comb sits crookedly in its housing right out of the box. There are no clear instructions on how to extend or reseat the comb, but I managed to figure it out, only to find it still doesnât work. The ergonomic handle might be comfortable if you have hands the size of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s, but mine certainly donât. The marketing suggests it helps with mats, but all it does is snag on them and frustrate the cat. As someone who has been grooming cats for 40 years and runs a cat rescue, I’m more than experienced in groomingâthis product simply doesnât deliver.

My German Shepherd usually avoids brushes and ran away from the clippers at first, but I found that I could get him to sit still with this tool, which is less intimidating for both of us. The clippers remove mats effortlesslyâjust three swipes usually do the trickâwith no discomfort for my pup. I was concerned about pulling, but he tolerated it well, even though he’s generally not very patient. This is by far the best investment I’ve made in pet grooming tools. The deshedder and rake were just okay, but these clippers are essential if your pet tends to get mats. Thankfully, my dog only has a small area behind his ears affected. Overall, a highly efficient toolâ10/10!
